She is three weeks pregnant and her husband is threatening her with divorce if she does not abort the foetus

I am a young Moroccan woman, married with two children. My question is: I am three weeks pregnant despite taking precautions to not get pregnant at my husband’s request. As soon as I told him about the pregnancy he rejected it completely and threatened to divorce me if I do not abort this child. I hope that you can help me. Thank you.

Praise be to Allaah.

A number of scholars are of the view that it is permissible to abort the nutfah before forty days, as has been explained in the answer to question no. 115954.

Some of them limited it to cases where that serves an interest or wards off harm, as is mentioned in a statement of the Council of Senior Scholars, the text of which is as follows:

1 – It is not permissible to abort the pregnancy at various stages unless there is a shar’i justification for doing so, and within very narrow limits.

2 – If the pregnancy is in the first trimester, which is forty days, and there is a legitimate purpose to be served by aborting it or harm can be warded off thereby, then it is permissible to abort it. As for aborting it during this period just because one fears hardship in raising children or one fears being unable to afford the expenses of feeding them and educating them, or because of their future, or because the couple are happy with the number of children they have, that is not permissible. End quote from al-Fataawa al-Jaami’ah (3/1055).

Based on that, if you are afraid that your husband will divorce you if the pregnancy continues, and he is serious about that, then there is no sin on you if you abort the foetus within the first forty days of the pregnancy.

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ibraaheem (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: From what we have seen above, it is seems that it is permissible to abort the nutfah. The evidence and reasons for that are clear.

As for the period in which it is permissible to abort the nutfah, it is forty days. End quote from Fataawa al-Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ibraaheem (11/125).

And Allaah knows best.

His wife behaves badly towards him and he has children from her. Should he divorce her?

My question may be summed up as a problem with my wife that has been going on for seven years. My wife was the wife of my brother -- may Allaah have mercy on him -- and he had four daughters and one son from her. My aim in marrying her was to take care of the orphans, even though she is 10 years older than me or more. The ongoing problem has to do with two things which are:
1. She is extremely jealous all the time, and there is no reason for this extreme jealousy. She is so jealous that she gets suspicious when I speak to my relatives or anyone else.
2. If there is any problem, we do not speak to each other for a period of no less than a week or two weeks, and it may last almost a month. Unfortunately, we brought in people we wanted to reconcile between us, but to no avail. These problems that I am facing are happening almost every month and I have tried to divorce her three times, so that I might have a break, but what has prevented me from doing that is that I love my three children and my brother's children very much. What is the solution with this weird wife? By Allaah, I have begun to hate her very much, and were it not for my children, I would have divorced her a long time ago.

Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly:

Many women do not understand the difference between jealousy, doubt and suspicion, and they do not understand that this jealousy could destroy the marriage and lead to break-up of the family. When will women understand that?

This jealousy on the part of the wife of the brother who is asking this question is going to destroy trust between her and her husband, and lead to her wrecking her home with her own hands. This way of treating the husband will destroy his love for her and cause it to be replaced with hatred; it will destroy his desire to continue the marriage and will bring it to a hasty end.

The wise wife is the one who weighs up matters carefully and does not cause trouble to her husband or develop doubt and suspicion about his normal activities. Rather she strives to generate trust between her and him and to lay the foundations of love and happiness between her and him, so that their married life will be harmonious, otherwise she will soon be numbered among the divorcees.

Secondly:

Our advice to the husband is to take it easy and not be hasty. The nature of women is different from that of men, and there is no one who is happy with his wife but there is some crookedness in her actions and behaviour, which may be more or less according to her level of religious commitment, common sense and good behaviour.

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allaah (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) said: “Woman is created from a rib that will never become straight. So if you enjoy her, then enjoy her with the crookedness that is in her, for if you try to straighten her you will break her, and breaking her means divorcing her.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (3153) and Muslim (1468).

Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

This hadeeth indicates being kind towards women and treating them gently, and putting up with crookedness in their nature and the possibility of weakness in their intellect, and shows that it is not right to divorce them for no reason, and that a man should not hope to straighten her.

Sharh Muslim (10/57).

What we think you should do is put up with her attitude and try to reconcile with her and increase her knowledge and faith, giving her what is required for that of beneficial books and tapes and good companions. And you should make your kind treatment of her another means of achieving that, as well as offering a great deal of supplication.

You should understand that divorce is a means of breaking up and scattering families, and it affects the wife and children in most cases. Many people put up with bad behaviour on the part of their wives for the sake of their children and in the interests of the children, so that they raise them in a good way so that they could help their mother to be obedient and to mend her ways. This is something that is tried and tested, and this is what we think you should do.

But if you cannot put up with her behaviour and you would end up mistreating her and denying her her rights, then divorce her. Perhaps she will come to her senses after the first or second divorce (talaaq), but if she persists in the way she is behaving and you cannot put up with her, then there are many other women besides her and Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“But if they separate (by divorce), Allaah will provide abundance for everyone of them from His Bounty. And Allaah is Ever All‑Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All‑Wise”

[al-Nisa’ 4:130].

And Allaah is the source of strength.

A Christian is asking why alcohol is emphatically prohibited in Islam?

When we ask the reason why alcohol is forbidden in Islam we are told that it robs us of our senses. But drinking a small cup of it every few months is not going to have any harmful effect, rather some scientists say that a little of it is good for the heart. So why is there this prohibition on drinking even a drop of it? Man has the sense to control his actions and to stop drinking before he becomes intoxicated, so why does Islam require Muslims to keep away from alcohol and pork in order for the religious commitment to be sound? Why not stop at pointing out their harmful effects and give people the choice?.

Praise be to Allaah.
Firstly: we welcome you to our site as a seeker of truth, and we ask Allaah to make our answer clear and to show you, after you read it and think about it, the fairness, wisdom and perfection of Islamic sharee’ah, which will make you think for yourself and seek the truth and follow it.

Secondly: it is affirmed by our Islamic sharee’ah that it came to bring and increase good things, and to ward off and reduce harmful things. Whatever is beneficial or mostly beneficial is permissible (halaal) and whatever is harmful or mostly harmful is forbidden (haraam). Alcohol undoubtedly falls into the second category. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“They ask you (O Muhammad) concerning alcoholic drink and gambling. Say: In them is a great sin, and (some) benefits for men, but the sin of them is greater than their benefit”

[al-Baqarah 2:219]

The harmful and evil effects of alcohol are well known to all people, to knowledgeable and ignorant alike. Among the harmful effects of alcohol is that which was mentioned by Allaah (interpretation of the meaning):

“O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), and gambling, and Al‑Ansaab (stone altars for sacrifices to idols, jinn, etc), and Al‑Azlaam (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Shaytaan’s (Satan’s) handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful.

91. Shaytaan (Satan) wants only to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants (alcoholic drinks) and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allaah and from As‑Salaah (the prayer). So, will you not then abstain?”

[al-Maa’idah 5:90-91]

In these two verses Allaah emphatically forbids alcohol, when He mentions it in conjunction with Al‑Ansaab (stone altars for sacrifices to idols, jinn, etc), and Al‑Azlaam (arrows for seeking luck or decision), which were symbols of shirk that were widespread in the Arabian peninsula before Islam, and He describes it as being the Shaytaan’s handiwork, which is immorality and evil. And Allaah commands us to avoid it and describes that as being the means that leads to success. And He describes its spiritual harm as hindering man from carrying out the obligations and duties enjoined by sharee’ah, namely remembrance of Allaah (dhikr) and prayer.

Alcohol leads to many harmful things, and deserves to be called “the mother of all evils” – as it was described by our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), who said: “Alcohol is the mother of all evils.” A hasan hadeeth quoted by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 1854. And the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Alcohol is the mother of all evils, the greatest of major sins. Whoever drinks it may end up committing incest with his mother, his maternal aunt and his paternal aunt.” This hadeeth is hasan on the basis of corroborating evidence, as stated by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, 1853.

This is some of the evidence of the truthfulness of our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). And what he spoke of has indeed come to pass. Have you not heard the news about that young man who came home drunk and committed incest with his mother after imbibing intoxicants? He threatened to kill himself if she did not do it, so she took pity on him and did what he wanted. Then when he came to his senses and realized what had happened, he killed himself.

Look at how things ended after he drank alcohol. He committed incest with his mother, then he killed himself. We ask Allaah to keep us safe and sound.

The Encyclopaedia Britannica states that most cases of sexual assault against relatives such as sisters, mothers and daughters happen under the influence of alcohol.

With regard to those who say that drinking a little alcohol is good for the heart, the response to that is:

1 – Modern research has proven that what is said about the benefits of alcohol for the heart and that it dilates the arteries, is a serious mistake. Alcohol does not dilate the arteries that bring nutrition to the heart, as was thought in the past, rather it dilates the veins that lie beneath the skin, whilst at the same time constricting the arteries, because of the accumulation of fats and cholesterol in them. This contributes to blood clots in the heart and angina, especially when it is accompanied by smoking, which contributes to congestion and narrowing of the arteries.

Alcohol also affects the muscle of the heart itself, when it becomes poisoned and dysfunctional, especially after drinking beer that contains cobalt, as when the heart becomes inflamed as a result of exhaustion when burning alcohol.

2 – These supposed benefits to the heart may be attained by means of things other than alcohol, the sinfulness and harmful effects of which outweigh any good it may do or benefits it may bring.

3 – It has also been said that the benefits that alcohol is said to bring to the heart come from the fruits and other substances from which alcohol is made, such as grapes, apples, etc. Based on this, these benefits may be obtained from these foods in the forms in which Allaah has permitted them, without making alcohol from them.

4 – We should weigh up those benefits to the heart – if they are true – against the destructive effects that alcohol has on health, which you can find out about by consulting any medical reference work that speaks of addiction to alcohol and its destructive effects on man.

See for example: al-Idmaan al-Kuhooli by Dr Nabeel Subhi al-Taweel, published by Mu’sasat al-Risaalah, Beirut.

Abhaath wa A’maal al-Mu’tamar al-‘Aalami al-Thaalith wa’l-Raabi’ ‘an al-Tibb al-Islami, published in Kuwait, 1405 AH, 1407 AH.

Because some people in the past – like some of their counterparts nowadays – thought that wine had some benefits, Taariq ibn Suwayd al-Ja’fi – one of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) – came and asked him about alcohol, and he forbade it. He said: “We make it as a remedy”. He said: “It is not a remedy, rather it is a disease.” Narrated by Muslim. This is a sign that his Prophethood was true.

With regard to your saying that “Man has the sense to control his actions and to stop drinking before he becomes intoxicated”, this pays no attention to the ways of the accursed Shaytaan, who seeks to distance people from the Lord of the Worlds. It is also the words of one who does not know – or perhaps chooses to ignore – how a drinker’s relationship with alcohol begins until he becomes drunk or addicted.

The Shaytaan gradually leads a person from a little to a lot, from minor to major, from sin to kufr, as much as he can, step by step. This is what the Lord of the Worlds refers to in Soorat al-Noor, where He says (interpretation of the meaning):

“O you who believe! Follow not the footsteps of Shaytaan (Satan). And whosoever follows the footsteps of Shaytaan (Satan), then, verily, he commands Al‑Fahsha’ [i.e. to commit indecency (illegal sexual intercourse)], and Al‑Munkar [disbelief and polytheism (i.e. to do evil and wicked deeds; and to speak or to do what is forbidden in Islam)]. And had it not been for the Grace of Allaah and His Mercy on you, not one of you would ever have been pure from sins. But Allaah purifies (guides to Islam) whom He wills, and Allaah is All‑Hearer, All‑Knower”

[al-Noor 24:21]

The poet also referred to this when he said:

“A glance, then a smile, then a greeting, then words, then an appointment, then a meeting.”

Although this is clear to everyone who understands how people are and how the Shaytaan gets to them, it is more obvious in the case of alcohol and those who drink it.

According to the eastern proverb, “In the beginning a man takes a cup of wine… then the first cup takes a second, then the cup of wine takes the man.”

The story begins with advice from a doctor or friend to have a cup of wine to increase the appetite, or to help one relax, or it starts by joining friends in a social gathering where cups of alcohol are being passed around, or as part of a meal offered, or whatever.

Then gradually physical and psychological bonds are formed to alcohol until it becomes part of a person’s life, and the drunkard becomes a slave to intoxication and to alcohol, and he seeks it as a sick person seeks medicine, as the poet said:

A cup that is drunk for pleasure, and a cup that is drunk as a remedy for the first.

In the first cup he may have found some benefit, without getting drunk, and some relaxation and pleasure without losing his mind, and the second likewise, but now he is longing for the cup of yesterday. When the body gets used to this alcoholic poison, it needs to increase the dose of alcohol time after time, in order to enjoy the relaxation and pleasure that it found in the first cup. Then the drunkard starts to drink more regularly, and his desire for alcohol grows stronger. The only guarantee against addiction is not to drink alcohol at all.

Hence we can see the wisdom of Islam in forbidding a little or a lot of alcohol, because a little is the first step towards a lot, and a little added to a little becomes a lot.

As the poet said: Do not think of a little as insignificant, because even the mountains are formed of small pebbles.

With regard to your asking: why does Islam require the Muslims to keep away from alcohol and pork in order for their religious commitment to be sound? Why does it not just explain how harmful they are and let people choose for themselves?

This is the flawed questioning of one who is trying to cheat himself. It is well known that people are not all the same in their levels of understanding of what is beneficial and what is harmful, and their levels of will power are not the same either, when it comes to choosing what is beneficial and avoiding what is harmful. The behaviour of individuals and societies cannot be controlled if things are left to each person’s choice.

If things are left to people’s choice then the harm that results from drinking alcohol is not limited only to the one who drinks, so that he could be left to his own devices and choose whatever he wants for himself. Rather the harmful results affect everyone. The diseases that result from alcohol weaken society as a whole. The productivity of the drunkard is decreased because of his drunkenness, which affects others. The economy is affected as a result of the money spent on treating him, which also affects others. Moreover there are crimes which result from this addiction. In a World Health Organization report on violent crimes in 30 countries, including the US and the UK, it says that 86% of murders and 50% of rapes are carried out under the influence of alcohol. There are many similar, well-known statistics on such topics in various countries around the world.

With regard to road accidents, the statistics are even more well-known. In 1965 – for example – there were 49,000 deaths on roads in the US, and 1,800,000 cases of permanent disability. Public health officials at the time estimated that half of these deaths were caused by alcohol. The losses resulting from these deaths in that year alone were valued at 8900 million dollars.

In Chile, in South America, 70% of traffic accidents in 1966 were caused by drunkenness. In Paris between 10 and 15 % of all accidents were found to have been caused by alcohol.

Moreover, we may respond to this question by asking:

Why don’t we explain how evil it is to steal and then leave people to make their own choice, with no force or punishment? The same could be said of killing and bribery… But then society would become a dangerous and barbaric place, governed by the law of the jungle.

This question itself may be directed against all the laws and systems which people follow in their lives.

The main reason why people deviate from the religion of Allaah, which was revealed from heaven, and go against the laws that He has prescribed for His slaves, is this idea – the idea that people can be left with no commands to follow or prohibitions to heed, even though adhering to commands and prohibitions is what is meant by submission to Allaah (‘uboodiyyah) in its simplest form. This is the pure right of the Creator because He is the Creator, and it is the primary duty of the created being, because he is created. The Lord of the Worlds says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Does man think that he will be left neglected (without being punished or rewarded for the obligatory duties enjoined by his Lord Allaah on him)?”

[al-Qiyaamah 75:36].

i.e., does man think that his Lord will leave him alone, with no obligations or commands or prohibitions, then He will ignore him in his grave with no resurrection, no gathering, no reckoning? What then would be the point of servitude to the Lord of the Worlds, if there were no commands or prohibitions, no reward or punishment? How then would anyone enter Paradise?.

Discussion with a Christian about the Christian doctrine of redemption

Why do Muslims persist in denying that the Messiah came to redeem us?.

Praise be to Allaah.
The doctrine of redemption, and the basis of this doctrine which is their belief that the Messiah (peace be upon him) was crucified, is one of the basic doctrines of Christianity, so much so that they would gamble the entire religion on this doctrine. The English cardinal Manning says in his book “Eternal Priesthood”: “The importance of this confusing topic is obvious, for if the death of Christ on the cross is not real, then the basis of the church’s doctrine will crumble from its foundations, because if Christ did not die on the cross, then there is no sacrifice, no salvation, and no trinity… Paul, the Apostles and all the churches say that, i.e., if Christ did not die then there was no resurrection either.”

This is what Paul said:

“And if Christ has not been raised, then preaching is useless and so is your faith.”

I Corinthians 15:14 – New International Version (NIV)

Just as they struggle with their belief in trinity and what it means, and how they can reconcile it with the belief in monotheism which is affirmed in the Old Testament (See the question: 12682), and just as they also struggle with everything that has to do with the crucifixion and its details, which is the basis of their belief in redemption which they believe is the reason for the crucifixion (see also no. 12615), we say: as confusion is inevitable for everyone who turns away from the light of revelation that came down from Allaah, similarly they are confused about the doctrine of redemption.

Does redemption mean saving all of mankind, as John says:

“…Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world”

I John 2:1-2 (NIV)?

Or is it only for those who believe and are baptized:

“Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned”

Mark 16:16 (NIV)?

The one who studies the life and sayings of the Messiah will see clearly that the call of the Messiah was addressed to the Children of Israel, and that throughout his mission he forbade his disciples to call anyone else. So salvation must have been only for them. This is what we see in the story of the Canaanite woman who said to him:

“… ‘Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession.’

Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, ‘Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.’

He answered, ‘I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.’

The woman came and knelt before him. ‘Lord, help me!’ she said.

He replied, ‘It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs.’”

Matthew 15:22-26 – NIV

The Messiah did not heal the daughter of the Canaanite woman, although he was able to do so, so how could he redeem all of mankind?

Was this salvation from the “original sin” of Adam only, or does it include all of our sins?

But no one can bear the sin of anyone else, or redeem him with his own self, as Allaah tells us in His Holy Book (interpretation of the meaning):

“And no bearer of burdens shall bear another’s burden; and if one heavily laden calls another to (bear) his load, nothing of it will be lifted even though he be near of kin. You (O Muhammad) can warn only those who fear their Lord unseen and perform As‑Salaah (Iqaamat‑as‑Salaah). And he who purifies himself (from all kinds of sins), then he purifies only for the benefit of his ownself. And to Allaah is the (final) Return (of all)”

[Faatir 35:18]

This is what the texts of their Bible also say:

“The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him”

Ezekiel 18:20-21-- NIV

There is no inherited sin (“original sin”):

“If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin.

He who hates me hates my Father as well.

If I had not done among them what no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these miracles, and yet they have hated both me and my Father”

John 15:22-24 – NIV

When there is sin – whether a person has committed it himself or inherited it from Adam or from another of his forefathers – can this sin not be erased through repentance?

The people of heaven rejoice over the one who repents like the shepherd rejoices when he finds his lost sheep, and the women rejoices over her lost penny when she finds it, and a father rejoices over his prodigal son when he returns:

“I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.”

Luke 15:7

God promises those who repent that their repentance will be accepted:

“But if a wicked man turns away from all the sins he has committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, he will surely live; he will not die.

None of the offenses he has committed will be remembered against him. Because of the righteous things he has done, he will live.”

Ezekiel 18:21-23 – NIV. See also Isaiah 55:7

Putting one's trust in one’s lineage without repenting or doing righteous deeds is a kind of madness; if a person’s deeds slow him down, his lineage will not help him to speed up, as our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said. (Saheeh Muslim, 2699)

John the Baptist (Yahya – peace be upon him) taught you the same things:

“You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire”

Matthew 3:7-10 – NIV

Forgiveness of sins through the sinner’s repentance is what befits the kind and merciful God – not sacrifice and crucifixion and the shedding of blood. This is what the Bible says:

“I desire mercy, not sacrifice. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners (to repentance)”

Matthew 9:13 – NIV
(the words “to repentance” do not appear in the NIV but are present in the “King James” or “Authorized” translation of the Bible).

Hence Paul says:

“Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him.”

Romans 4:7-8 – NIV

We believe that if Allaah had commanded some of His slaves to kill themselves in repentance from their sins, that would not be too much for them to do, and that would not contradict His being kind and merciful. He commanded the Children of Israel to do that when they asked to see God directly, but even then no one was to be killed for anyone else, rather a person was to be killed for his own sins, not for the sins of another. That was the heavy burden and fetters that were upon them (cf. al-A’raaf 7:157), from which Allaah has spared this ummah.

Another matter that disproves the belief in original sin is the texts which mean that each person is responsible for his own actions, as Allaah says in His holy Book (interpretation of the meaning):

“Whosoever does righteous good deed, it is for (the benefit of) his ownself; and whosoever does evil, it is against his ownself. And your Lord is not at all unjust to (His) slaves”

[Fussilat 41:46]

“Every person is a pledge for what he has earned”

[al-Muddaththir 74:38]

Similarly it says in your Bible:

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged.

For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you”

Matthew 7:1-2 – NIV

“For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done”

Matthew 16:27 – NIV

The Messiah affirmed the importance of righteous deeds, and said to his disciples:

“Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?'

Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'”

Matthew 7:21-22 – NIV

Similarly, he said:

“The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil.

They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth

Matthew 13:41-42 – NIV

He did not tell them of redemption by which they would be saved from the reckoning.

Those who do righteous deeds are the only ones who will be saved on the Day of Resurrection from the reckoning, whilst those who did evil deeds will be carried off to Hell, with no salvation by the Messiah or by anyone else:

“… for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice

and come out--those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned

John 5:28-29 – NIV

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory…

Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels’”

Matthew 25:31-42 – NIV

The Messiah said to them:

“You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?”

Matthew 23:33 – NIV

Adolf Hernck noted that the epistles of the Apostles did not include the idea of salvation by redemption, rather they suggested that salvation is attained by good deeds, as it says in the Epistle of James:

“What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him?

… faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

… faith without deeds is useless (or dead).”

James 2:14 – NIV

And Peter says:

“I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism

but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right”

Acts 10:34-35

There are many similar examples in the words of the Messiah and the disciples.

Allaah the Almighty has spoken the truth (interpretation of the meaning):

“O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allaah is that (believer) who has At‑Taqwa [i.e. he is one of the Muttaqoon (the pious)]. Verily, Allaah is All‑Knowing, All‑Aware”

[al-Hujuraat 49:13]

What is strange is that Paul himself, who abolished this teaching and said that deeds were to no avail, and that salvation is only by faith, affirmed the importance of righteous deeds on other occasions, such as when he said:

“A man reaps what he sows

… Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up”

Galatians 6:7 – NIV

“and each will be rewarded according to his own labour”

I Corinthians 3:8 – NIV

(For more information on this matter see: Dr Mundhir al-Saqqaar: Hal aftadaana al-Maseeh ‘ala al-Saleeb)

So you have no way of resolving this contradiction unless you ignore your common sense and reasoning, and delude yourself with false wishes, as you do in the case of the doctrine of trinity and unity, which is what John R Stott advises you to do in his book Basic Christianity: I do not dare to deal with this subject, before I admit frankly that a great deal of it must remain a hidden mystery… I wonder how our weak minds cannot comprehend it fully, but there will inevitably come a day when the veil will be lifted and all mysteries will be resolved, and we will see the Messiah as he really is!

… How is it possible that God was incarnated in Christ, whilst making Christ a sacrifice for our sin? I cannot answer this, but the Apostle himself places these two truths side by side and I accept the idea completely, just as I accept that Jesus the Nazarene is human and divine in one person… If we cannot resolve this contradiction or solve this mystery, we should accept the truth as proclaimed by Christ and his disciples, that he bore our sins.”

Basic Christianity, p. 110, 121, quoting from Dr Sa’ood al-Khalaf, al-Yahoodiyyah wa’l-Nasraaniyyah, p. 238.

Yes, you and we will see the Messiah as he really is, one of the slaves of Allaah who are close to Him, and one of His Prophets who were sent, on that Day when the veil will be lifted and he will disavow himself of all those who took him as a god besides Allaah, or who attributed to him words that he did not say. At that time there were no mysteries or puzzles:

“And (remember) when Allaah will say (on the Day of Resurrection): ‘O ‘Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)! Did you say unto men: Worship me and my mother as two gods besides Allaah?’ He will say: ‘Glory be to You! It was not for me to say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, You would surely have known it. You know what is in my inner‑self though I do not know what is in Yours; truly, You, only You, are the All‑Knower of all that is hidden (and unseen).

117. ‘Never did I say to them aught except what You (Allaah) did command me to say: Worship Allaah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them while I dwelt amongst them, but when You took me up, You were the Watcher over them; and You are a Witness to all things. (This is a great admonition and warning to the Christians of the whole world).

118. ‘If You punish them, they are Your slaves, and if You forgive them, verily, You, only You, are the All‑Mighty, the All‑Wise.’

119. Allaah will say: ‘This is a Day on which the truthful will profit from their truth: theirs are Gardens under which rivers flow (in Paradise) — they shall abide therein forever. Allaah is pleased with them and they with Him. That is the great success (Paradise).

120. To Allaah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all that is therein, and He is Able to do all things

[al-Maa’idah 5:116-120]

Will you think about it before it is too late?

“Say (O Muhammad): ‘O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians): Come to a word that is just between us and you, that we worship none but Allaah (Alone), and that we associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords besides Allaah.’ Then, if they turn away, say: ‘Bear witness that we are Muslims’”

[Aal ‘Imraan 3:64].

Praying for kaafirs to be guided

In the answer to question no. 4569, I read that the shaykh was making du’aa’ that the Raafidis be guided. Is this appropriate? Because it is not permissible to pray for the mushrikeen.

Praise be to Allaah.
Firstly:

We thank our brother for his interest and for this question about something that is confusing him in some of the answers.

Secondly:

For more information on rulings concerning the Raafidis and some of their views, please see questions no. 1148 and 10272.

Thirdly:

Praying for forgiveness for the mushrikeen is undoubtedly haraam, as is indicated by the Qur’aan and Sunnah.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“It is not (proper) for the Prophet and those who believe to ask Allaah’s forgiveness for the Mushrikoon, even though they be of kin, after it has become clear to them that they are the dwellers of the Fire (because they died in a state of disbelief).

And Ibraaheem’s (Abraham) invoking (of Allaah) for his father’s forgiveness was only because of a promise he [Ibraaheem (Abraham)] had made to him (his father). But when it became clear to him that he (his father) is an enemy of Allaah, he dissociated himself from him. Verily, Ibraaheem was Awwah (one who invokes Allaah with humility, glorifies Him and remembers Him much) and was forbearing”

[al-Tawbah 9:113-114]

al-Sa’di (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

This means, it is not appropriate or good for the Prophet and those who believe in him to “ask Allaah’s forgiveness for the mushrikeen”, i.e. for those who disbelieve in Him and worship others alongside Him. “even though they be of kin, after it has become clear to them that they are the dwellers of the Fire”

Although the Close Friend of the Most Merciful, Ibraaheem (peace be upon him) prayed for forgiveness for his father, that was “was only because of a promise he [Ibraaheem (Abraham)] had made to him (his father)” – when he said, “I will ask forgiveness of my Lord for you. Verily, He is unto me Ever Most Gracious” [Maryam 19:47 – interpretation of the meaning] which was before he knew of his father’s fate.

When it became clear to Ibraaheem that his father was an enemy of Allaah who would die in kufr, and his preaching and reminding was not going to be of any avail, he disowned him, in order to please his Lord.

“Verily, Ibraaheem was Awwah (one who invokes Allaah with humility, glorifies Him and remembers Him much)” means, he turned to his Lord in all his affairs, making a lot of dhikr and du’aa’ and always praying for forgiveness.

“and was forbearing” means, he was compassionate towards people and was tolerant towards their mistakes; he was not provoked by the attitude of the ignorant, and he did not retaliate in kind against those who offended him. His father said to him, “I will indeed stone you” and he said to him, “Peace be on you! I will ask forgiveness of my Lord for you. Verily, He is unto me Ever Most Gracious” [Maryam 19:47 – interpretation of the meaning]

Al-Bukhaari (3884) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) called his paternal uncle Abu Taalib to Islam when he was dying, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I will pray for forgiveness for you so long as I am not forbidden to do so.” Then the following verses were revealed (interpretation of the meaning):

“It is not (proper) for the Prophet and those who believe to ask Allaah’s forgiveness for the Mushrikoon, even though they be of kin, after it has become clear to them that they are the dwellers of the Fire (because they died in a state of disbelief).”

[al-Tawbah 9:113]

“Verily, you (O Muhammad) guide not whom you like”

[al-Qasas 28:56]

Al-Haafiz said:

“So long as I am not forbidden to do so” means, so long as I am not forbidden to pray for forgiveness.

Muslim (976) narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I asked my Lord for permission to pray for forgiveness for my mother, and He did not give me permission. I asked Him for permission to visit her grave, and He granted me permission.”

Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

This indicates that it is forbidden to pray for forgiveness for the kuffaar.

It is clear from these two ahaadeeth that this prohibition applies to praying for forgiveness for them. The same applies to praying for them to be admitted to Paradise and saved from torment.

The reason for this prohibition is:

“That seeking forgiveness for them in this case (i.e., when it is clear that they are dwellers of the Fire) is a mistake and is of no use, so it is not befitting for the Prophet and the believers to do this, because if they (the mushrikeen) have died in shirk or it is known that they will die in shirk, then the word of punishment has been fulfilled against them and they will abide forever in Hell, and the intercession of those who intercede and the prayers of forgiveness of those who pray will be to no avail.

Moreover, the Prophet (S) and those who believe with him are obliged to like that which pleases their Lord and hate that which angers Him; they have to take as friends those whom Allaah takes as friends and regard as enemies those whom Allaah regards as enemies, so praying for forgiveness for those who are clearly dwellers of the Fire goes against that and contradicts it.”

~ Shaykh al-Sa’di (may Allaah have mercy on him).

But praying for the kaafirs to be guided is not included in the prohibition on praying for forgiveness for them.

It is proven that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) prayed for some of the kuffaar to be guided.

Al-Bukhaari (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in al-Saheeh: “Chapter on making du’aa’ for the mushrikeen to be guided so that their hearts may be softened.” Then he mentioned the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: “Al-Tufayl ibn ‘Amr came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said. ‘[The tribe of] Daws has rebelled and rejected [Islam]. Pray to Allaah against them.’ He said, ‘O Allaah, guide Daws and bring them here.’” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2937; Muslim, 2524).

Al-Haafiz said in Fath al-Baari:

Al-Bukhaari mentioned the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah according to which al-Tufayl ibn ‘Amr al-Dawsi came (to the Prophet) and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, ‘O Allaah, guide Daws and bring them here.’ The phrase “so that their hearts may be softened” indicates that the compiler [i.e., al-Bukhaari] understood the variations in the Prophet’s attitude, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) sometimes prayed against the kuffaar and sometimes prayed for them. He did the former when they were strong and able to do more to the Muslims, and he did the latter when they were not causing any harm to the Muslims and there was the hope that they might enter Islam, as in the story of Daws.

Al-Tirmidhi narrated (2739) that Abu Moosa al-Ash’ari said: The Jews used to sneeze in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), hoping that he would say to them, “Yarhamakum Allaah (may Allaah have mercy on you).” But he would say, “Yahdeekum Allaah wa yuslihu baalakum) (may Allaah guide you and reform you).” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.

Al-Haafiz said:

The hadeeth of Abu Moosa indicates that they (the kuffaar) are included in the general command to pray for one who sneezes, but there is a special prayer for them in this case, which is to pray that they be guided and reformed, and there is nothing wrong with that. This is different from the prayer said for Muslims when they sneeze, for they are the ones for whom one should pray for mercy, unlike the kuffaar.

And Allaah knows best.

The Muslims’ beliefs concerning the Messiah ‘Eesa ibn Maryam

What are the Muslims’ beliefs concerning the Messiah ‘Eesa ibn Maryam?.

Praise be to Allaah.
Our beliefs concerning the Messiah ‘Eesa ibn Maryam (Jesus the son of Mary – peace be upon him) are those indicated by the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of our Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

We believe that ‘Eesa (peace be upon him) was one of the slaves of Allaah, and one of His noble Messengers. Allaah sent him to the Children of Israel to call them to believe in Allaah alone and worship Him alone.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And (remember) when ‘Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), said: ‘O Children of Israel! I am the Messenger of Allaah unto you, confirming the Tawraat [(Torah) which came] before me, and giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad.’ But when he (Ahmad, i.e. Muhammad) came to them with clear proofs, they said: ‘This is plain magic’”

[al-Saff 61:6]

“But the Messiah [‘Eesa (Jesus)] said: ‘O Children of Israel! Worship Allaah, my Lord and your Lord.’ Verily, whosoever sets up partners (in worship) with Allaah, then Allaah has forbidden Paradise to him, and the Fire will be his abode. And for the Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers) there are no helpers”

[al-Maa’idah 5:72]

‘Eesa was not a god or the son of God as the Christians claim.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Surely, they have disbelieved who say: ‘Allaah is the Messiah [‘Eesa (Jesus)], son of Maryam (Mary).’”

[al-Maa’idah 5:72]

“And the Jews say: ‘Uzair (Ezra) is the son of Allaah, and the Christians say: Messiah is the son of Allaah. That is their saying with their mouths, resembling the saying of those who disbelieved aforetime. Allaah’s Curse be on them, how they are deluded away from the truth!”

[al-Tawbah 9:30]

The first words that ‘Eesa spoke when Allaah caused him to speak when he was in the cradle were (interpretation of the meaning):

“He [‘Eesa (Jesus)] said: ‘Verily, I am a slave of Allaah, He has given me the Scripture and made me a Prophet’”

[Maryam 19:30]

We believe that Allaah supported him with miracles that proved he was speaking the truth.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“(Remember) when Allaah will say (on the Day of Resurrection). ‘O ‘Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)! Remember My Favour to you and to your mother when I supported you with Rooh‑ul‑Qudus [Jibreel (Gabriel)] so that you spoke to the people in the cradle and in maturity; and when I taught you writing, Al‑Hikmah (the power of understanding), the Tawraat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel); and when you made out of the clay, a figure like that of a bird, by My Permission, and you breathed into it, and it became a bird by My Permission, and you healed those born blind, and the lepers by My Permission, and when you brought forth the dead by My Permission; and when I restrained the Children of Israel from you (when they resolved to kill you) as you came unto them with clear proofs, and the disbelievers among them said: This is nothing but evident magic’”

[al-Maa'idah 5:110]

We believe that ‘Eesa was born from the Virgin Maryam with no father, and that is not impossible for Allaah Who, when He wills a thing, says “Be!” and it is.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, the likeness of ‘Eesa (Jesus) before Allaah is the likeness of Adam. He created him from dust, then (He) said to him: ‘Be!’ — and he was”

[Aal ‘Imraan 3:59]

“(Remember) when the angels said: ‘O Maryam (Mary)! Verily, Allaah gives you the glad tidings of a Word [‘Be!’ — and he was! i.e. ‘Eesa (Jesus) the son of Maryam (Mary)] from Him, his name will be the Messiah ‘Eesa (Jesus), the son of Maryam (Mary), held in honour in this world and in the Hereafter, and will be one of those who are near to Allaah.”

He will speak to the people, in the cradle and in manhood, and he will be one of the righteous.’

She said: ‘O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me.’ He said: ‘So (it will be) for Allaah creates what He wills. When He has decreed something, He says to it only: “Be!” and it is’”

[Aal ‘Imraan 3:45-47]

We believe that he permitted to the Jews some of the things that had been forbidden to them.

Allaah tells us that ‘Eesa said to the Children of Israel (interpretation of the meaning):

“And I have come confirming that which was before me of the Tawraat (Torah), and to make lawful to you part of what was forbidden to you, and I have come to you with a proof from your Lord. So fear Allaah and obey me”

[Aal ‘Imraan 3:50]

We believe that he did not die and his enemies the Jews did not kill him, rather Allaah saved him from them and raised him up to heaven alive.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And because of their (Jews) disbelief and uttering against Maryam (Mary) a grave false charge (that she has committed illegal sexual intercourse);

And because of their saying (in boast), ‘We killed Messiah ‘Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), the Messenger of Allaah,’ — but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but it appeared so to them the resemblance of ‘Eesa (Jesus) was put over another man (and they killed that man)], and those who differ therein are full of doubts. They have no (certain) knowledge, they follow nothing but conjecture. For surely; they killed him not [i.e. ‘Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)]:

But Allaah raised him [‘Eesa (Jesus)] up (with his body and soul) unto Himself (and he is in the heavens). And Allaah is Ever All‑Powerful, All‑Wise”
[al-Nisa’ 4:156-158]

We believe that he told his followers of the coming of our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

We believe that he will come back down at the end of time, and will disprove the claim of his enemies the Jews that they killed him, and will disprove the claim of the Christians that he is God or the son of God, and he will not accept anything from them but Islam.

Al-Bukhaari (2222) and Muslim (155) narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, soon the son of Maryam will descend among you [according to another report: the Hour will not begin until the son of Maryam descends among you] as a just judge. He will break the cross, kill the pigs and abolish the jizyah, and money will become abundant until no one will accept it.”

“Soon” means it will inevitably happen quickly.

“will descend among you” means among this ummah.

“A just judge” means that he will come down and rule according to this sharee’ah, and that this sharee’ah will remain and not be abrogated, rather ‘Eesa will be one of the rulers of this ummah.

“He will break the cross and kill the pigs” means he will declare as false the religion of the Christians by breaking the cross in a real sense and proving false the Christians’ claims and veneration of the cross.

“and he will abolish the jizyah”:

al-Nawawi said:

The correct view concerning this is that he will not accept it, and he will not accept anything from the kaafirs but Islam. If any of them offer the jizyah that will not make him stop fighting them. Rather he will not accept anything but Islam or death. This is the view of Imam Abu Sulaymaan al-Khattaabi and other scholars (may Allaah have mercy on them).

End quote.

“Money will become abundant” – the reason for this abundance will be the descent of blessings and the spread of goodness because of justice and the absence of oppression or wrongdoing. At that time the earth will bring forth its treasures, and desire to keep money will decrease because they will know that that Hour is at hand.

Then he will die and the Muslims will offer the funeral prayer for him and bury him.

Ahmad (9349) narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I am the closest of people to ‘Eesa ibn Maryam because there was no Prophet between him and me…” Then he mentioned his descent at the end of time. Then he said: “And he will remain for as long as Allaah wills he should remain, then he will die and the Muslims will offer the funeral prayer for him and bury him.” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah (2182).

We believe that he will disavow himself on the Day of Resurrection of the claims that he was a god.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And (remember) when Allaah will say (on the Day of Resurrection): 'O ‘Eesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)!

Never did I say to them aught except what You (Allaah) did command me to say: Worship Allaah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them while I dwelt amongst them, but when You took me up, You were the Watcher over them; and You are a Witness to all things’”

[al-Maa'idah 5:116-117]

“ ‘Never did I say to them aught except what You (Allaah) did command me to say: Worship Allaah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them while I dwelt amongst them, but when You took me up, You were the Watcher over them; and You are a Witness to all things’”

[al-Maa'idah 5:116-117]

This is what the Muslims believe about the Messiah ‘Eesa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him).

Al-Bukhaari (3435) and Muslim (28) narrated from ‘Ubaadah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever bears witness that there is no god but Allaah alone, with no partner or associate, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger, and that ‘Eesa is His slave and Messenger, a word which Allaah bestowed upon Maryam and a spirit created by Him, and that Paradise is real, and Hell is real, Allaah will admit him through whichever of the eight gates of Paradise he wishes.”

We ask Allaah to make us steadfast in faith and to cause us to die as believers.

May Allaah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad.

How to call a Christian to Islam

I am inviting someone to islam, i chat to him through the internet.. he lives in brazil and he is 18 years old..i already told him some stuff about islam.. but it appears that he is so religious, and it appears that he doesn't want to change to islam that easily.. he is christian(prostant),, can u plz tell me a good way to invite him to islam

Praise be to Allaah.
Before replying to this question, I would like to say how impressed I am with my brother’s concern to call people to Allaah, using the developments in computer science to further the mission of the Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon them). May Allaah reward him with the best reward, and record him among His righteous slaves. With regard to the question you asked:

The best way to call this man and everyone else is that which is indicated in the Qur’aan, where Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And argue not with the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), unless it be in (a way) that is better (with good words and in good manner, inviting them to Islamic Monotheism with His Verses)”

[al-‘Ankaboot 29:46]

“Invite (mankind, O Muhammad) to the way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Revelation and the Qur’aan) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better”

[al-Nahl 16:125]

And the command which Allaah issued to His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) when He said (interpretation of the meaning):

“Say (O Muhammad): O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians): Come to a word that is just between us and you, that we worship none but Allaah (Alone), and that we associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords besides Allaah”

[Aal ‘Imraan 3:64]

- Tell him about the innate nature of man (fitrah) which predisposes man to believe in Tawheed or the Oneness of Allaah, and how the doctrine of trinity contradicts that innate human nature and common sense.

- Explain to him the status that ‘Eesa (Jesus – peace be upon him) and his mother have among the Muslims, and that he is the slave of Allaah and His Messenger, and His Word which He bestowed upon Maryam (Mary), and a soul created by Him.

- Explain to him that the religion of Allaah is the same from Adam to Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and that it is Islam. Tell him that the differences are in the laws and that Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is the Seal of the Prophets (i.e., the last of them) and that his Book abrogates the rulings which came before and confirms the true beliefs and stories that were mentioned in them.

- Answer his questions calmly, and provide him, if necessary, with some of the books and tapes by Shaykh Ahmad Deedaat.

Answered by Shaykh Dr. ‘Abd al-Rahmaan al-Qaadi, Imam Muhammad ibn Sa’ood University, al-Qaseem Campus
